SCHUMANN: Symphony No. 2

BEETHOVEN: Violin Concerto

Kwame Ryan, conductor

Leila Josefowicz, violin

The luminous Leila Josefowicz astounds in Beethoven’s moving violin concerto, considered by many to be one of the most graceful and challenging works in the violin concerto repertoire. Barely 30 years old, Josefowicz has been stunning symphony audiences from Los Angeles to Toronto to Carnegie Hall since her teens. In this piece, bursting with life and energy, her performance highlights the heroism and struggle that inspired Beethoven throughout the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars.

Schumann’s intensely personal Symphony No. 2 also carries an uplifting tone, embodying “resilience of spirit” (in Schumann’s own words) by transforming a dramatic and turbulent first movement (“marked by melancholy,” the composer said) into a rapid and playful resolution, inspired in part by Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” in his Ninth Symphony.

Combined, these two pieces offer an ebullient musical perspective on the triumph of the human spirit for an uplifting evening of great music.
